Although the tightrope is only just over 400 pages and 50 of them are the notes of this book clearly in the category of the saga. It is an impressive work that is the result of research over 20 years. In short it follows one family and its various branches through more than six centuries of turmoil.
If you ask the average man on the street to describe the plight of the Jewish people, almost everyone in the area over the current situation in Israel, and the events that took place during the Second World War when the Nazis tried to annihilate the entire race. Few people realize that horrific as the Holocaust was, was not the first time that the Jews had been persecuted. In fact, persecution can be documented from biblical times onward.
Michael Karpin is a single family, Backenroth, the story begins in 1350 with their perilous journey to what is now called into eastern Germany to Poland. The reason that the measure was the plague that had havoc in Western Europe. Starting from nothing to the family has been dedicated to building a life for themselves. Initially becoming innkeepers, then merchants, and finally, the oil business. There were decades of peace and prosperity and decades of fear of uncertainty. Each ruler make arbitrary rules about what that business Jewish community could participate in. About the only constant in his life was changing. Some leaders saw the number of Jews as beneficial to the economy, while others felt that outsiders were taking advantage of the native people. Compensation took many forms, special taxes on the economic aspect of the spectrum, to violence and pogroms. This Backenroth from the weather with grace.
The family is well documented in the 19th and 20th centuries and indeed this is what much of the book focuses on. In the last decades of the 1800s the family moved into the oil business, but their methods were crude and oil still had not become a significant energy source, they represent a period of great prosperity for them. The First World War that took its toll, and a Once again the Jewish minority were in disagreement with the authorities and the Polish working class.
The biggest problem was yet to come, World War II changed their lives forever. First the Russians became their masters, imposing severe austerity measures and isolate successful families, such as anti-communist Backenroth were clear objectives. What I find amazing, but far from Tightrope the first book I've Read about Poland in the 30's and 40's is the way the population Jewish stayed put when it became apparent that the Germans were in motion. The Jewish people welcomed the German occupation, as they felt they were to be kinder and more liberal than the Russians either austere or even a little vengeful Poles. How wrong they were, and by the time he realized his error was much too late. Many Backenroth extended family perished at the hands of the Nazis but by some luck and cunning to survive, and their stories is a chronicle of the times darker human history.
Michael Karpin also leads to some interesting diversions as the story of Leopold Weiss, who shortly after the First World War he moved to Palestine, however, was his fellow Jews, but he became friends with the native Arabs, eventually changing its name to Muhammud Asad and embrace Islam, an event that shocked the family usually dominant.
I also enjoy the fact that the author took time to explain your story events in their cultural context. I'm not Jewish and found that largely explain the clarity of the story.
Over the centuries, the family grew and dispersed, the author has tracked down descendants in South and North America, Poland, Russia, Israel and everywhere in between. This book is a study of a book Text in the genealogy. What really surprised me is that the author is not part of the family, this book was the result of a chance encounter 20 years ago with an American South Backenroth clan connection. The depth of research is exceptional, I can not even begin to guess how many hours Michael Karpin has invested in this book. I do not give the books a number of stars, not my style, but if it would undoubtedly get 5 stars.
