Think of Hawaii and basically, that vacation and paradise - sun, surf, beach, nature, luau, even the honeymoon. For the coffee lover, Hawaii: real luxury coffee. In particular, Hawaii's Kona coffee.
The Hawaiian Kona coffee owes its aura of distinction to its history, tradition and Mother Nature. True Kona coffee grown on the volcanic slopes of what is known as the Kona coffee belt. The combination of the rich volcanic soil with weather patterns in the Kona district and has the perfect condition with which to grow this type of coffee beans. The result is one of the most elegant and cafes high quality in the world.
The history and tradition of Kona coffee is different from other coffee producing regions where coffee is indigenous bush and are served by its own people. The Kona coffee can actually attribute their existence and survival of many different nationalities.
That Spanish was a planted the coffee bean first on the island of Oahu. Then, the Kona coffee became a product of the grains that were brought to Brazil in the nineteenth century by a english. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the fall in world coffee prices almost drove the Hawaiian coffee plantation to extinction. Owners leased parts their farms to tenant farmers, most of whom were Japanese immigrants. Later, agricultural laborers originating from the Philippines and Europe could contribute to the growth of this type of coffee. But even before the farms were leased, Hawaiians and Chinese are largely the work force.
This historical review establishes the distinction Kona coffee enjoys today. As a result of leasing the different parts of the original coffee plantations, today holdings range from only two to five acres in size. Their small size may inhibit large-scale production, but the bushes are more attention.
The possibility of receiving specialized care and its rarity are two main factors why Kona coffee a higher price. In fact, receiving specialized care includes hand picking each of cherry coffee bushes. This is in marked contrast to the mechanized harvesting is required in other types of holdings in large quantities. Hand picking each gives farmers the opportunity to closely examine the quality of coffee cherries.
If your curiosity up now has awakened and is eager to buy your first bag of Kona coffee beans, here's a warning - not all of Kona coffee are sold fresh. By exploring the market, you must realize that there are "100% Kona Coffee" against "Kona blend." 100% Kona is pretty self explanatory. "Mixing Kona "is what we should be cautious.
There are vendors of Kona beans are mixed with common beans, such as Robusta and the amount of Kona beans could be so small as a grain per pound. This is what passes off as "Kona blend." The Hawaii state law dictates that sellers of Kona-blend would include 10% of Kona beans. But outside of Hawaii, Kona amount of grain could be significantly lower.
Needless to say, there is also a disparity in prices with the 100% more expensive Kona. If the price is objectionable, there is always the cheapest alternative - devoid of the work ethic, culture, history, and tradition.
