Porcelain Veneers
You may have heard about porcelain veneers, and you may be wondering what they are and what they can do for you. Well, you're in luck, because this article will describe porcelain veneers and their benefits.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin facades of porcelain that are cemented to the front of teeth. They are designed to improve the appearance of teeth, and can give some protection and strengthening to teeth.
What Can Porcelain Veneers Do for Me?
Porcelain veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth. Specifically, they can be used to correct:
· Discolored teeth
· Chipped teeth
· Cracked teeth
· Misshapen teeth
· Crooked teeth
Once porcelain veneers are cemented to your teeth, they become the visible surface of your smile. They cover your teeth and can build them up so that your smile is very even. They can reshape the tops of your teeth to accentuate or minimize aspects of your smile such as sharp canines or large incisors. They can be made to overlap the sides of your teeth, closing gaps, and making your teeth straight. (When used in this way, they are sometimes described as instant orthodontics.) Their smooth, glossy surface can be made to be any color, a brilliant white, a more natural tone to match your other teeth, even flecked with tiny hints of blue to match your eyes.
Porcelain Veneers: A Long-Lasting Solution
Although many people imagine that porcelain is fragile, dental porcelain is actually a very hard material. Although initially brittle, when bonded to teeth, the two reinforce one another with the mediating layer of the cement, making them highly resistant to damage.
Properly cared for, porcelain veneers are highly stain resistant and will retain their color for their entire lifespan. And how long do they last? Studies of porcelain veneers in actual use in patients' mouths have shown that over 98 % of pressed porcelain veneers last 11 years.
Disadvantages of Porcelain Veneers
Although porcelain veneers are a very good treatment for many dental problems, they are not a free pass. If properly placed and maintained, they can improve dental hygiene by creating an even surface for cleaning without voids where food deposits get caught and bacteria can find harborage.
Unfortunately, if not properly placed or cared for, they can be just the opposite. If the cement behind the veneers begins to dissolve as a result of excessive alcohol consumption or exposure to stomach acids, the void that forms can become a place for bacteria and food to collect, and this can lead the teeth to decay behind the veneer. Since the veneering process often involves removing enamel to place the veneer, bacteria now have a shortcut to enter the dentin and, eventually, the pulp of the tooth.
For this reason, properly caring for your veneers is essential not only to their long life, but to the continued health of your teeth.
