What is the difference between craft and art?
There are lots of beautiful wood sculpture out there that certainly is an art, but what the simple 'things? The work of people like Bill Judt, Mike Refsal Shippley or Harley? Carving or carving is an art form?
Height and height is only a means to an end if that end is the art, craft, or design. As such, you should not look to the media as the determining factor that something is art, but about yourself with the distillation of ideas or concepts that are equipped with the media either painting, silver halide (photo), wood, concrete, marble, steel, or computer programming (it also can be an art). As for the definition of art, there are many definitions, and interpretation broad and generic that I can give is that art transforms the ordinary or mundane and its existence raises a level beyond their own meaning. Take for example a painting we all know and accept as art, "The Mona Lisa". A description of this work is that it's just a portrait or a woman, who for the most part, not special, there are billions of portraits painted in existence, but this is special. Is it because it is the painting that makes it art? Again, DONT look at the medians, the oil paints can be used to paint a park bench, but they do art, not necessarily. The reason is because art is something that others do not do portraits, for example, some people say that the eyes follow you, contact you, reach deep into his soul and he's asking all kinds of questions you wouldnt ask on a daily. This is very different from the Grandmothers of paint by numbers painting of a dog, the dog is just a dog, nothing special, the artist has set up the distilled water or any special concepts or emotions at work. And though the artist tried to give something in not asking him any questions because the artist or going to tell Grandma has taken the ordinary and made it ordinary, and there is nothing special about it. So in this case we can say that Grandma is a craftsman and not a true artist. Back to carve, is a Whittles person smoking a pipe, is that art? What sense does this pipe become something else which is not, is an art. Conversely, if someone comes into a forest and say Whittles everysingle tree to a 2x4, without cutting the tree to prove a point that man manipulates his environment, and this is something else. It serves no other function than to be art, trying to raise their consciousness to a higher level everyday. Maybe this wasn't a good example, but I hope that clarifies some things.
