Turquoise is classified as a mineral and is classified in the class of phosphates with the phosphate chemical composition consisting of hydrated copper aluminum. It is considered by many as one of the most valuable and precious minerals for use in transparent today native American markets turquoise jewelry.
Over time, turquoise has been considered as a stone with magical properties and ancient folklore tells us that the stone can bring good luck in health, money and romance. Once the stone has been uncovered and exposed to air, changing colors when dried. As used and touched, it will absorb body oils and show More changes in coloration. This color change was the main reason that turquoise was and still is considered to have magical and mystical properties. Many of Indians of the Southwest Native American Indians believe that the sacred stone has healing powers and great good luck promote safety and family.
The first turquoise mines dating back to as early as 3500 BC C. with the Sinai of Egypt, which provided stones for the mosaics Mines and personal adornment the ancient kings of Egypt. The stone was later introduced to medieval Europe by Turkish traders. In the Western Hemisphere, Indian tribes had discovered the Aztecs and stone in 1000 BC and turquoise artifacts have been found in central Mexico and the Andes that dates from this period.
Depending on its point of origin, the beautiful gem can exhibit a surprising range of colors. A very attractive sky blue is very common and very popular in the southwest of today's markets jewelry and Native Americans. Dark blue to green to blue-green colors are also quite common. The Mojave Green Paper is a common hallmark example of the coloration the green gemstone. The veined (often called the matrix) in the stone can be seen as black or brown stripes running through it. Not all forms have matrix. Some of the most beautiful examples of the highest quality and have no parent at all and have a clear and consistent coloring. A good example of this free rock matrix is the variety of Sleeping Beauty mined in Arizona.
The southwestern United States is rich and abundant in different types of turquoise used in the development of Native sterling silver jewelry in America. Most of this stone is supplied by the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. My personal favorites are the Santa Rita New Mexico, Colorado Cripple Creek, Sleeping Beauty and Kingman Arizona and the Blue Royston Lander and Nevada. Whatever your favorite may be, can be sure that when you buy turquoise jewelry, you are making an investment in quality and timeless beauty.
Having lived most of my adult life in New Mexico, I've had years of exposure to the many beautiful examples of native silver jewelry of America as turquoise cuff bracelets, pendants and silver earrings handmade by Southwest Navajo, Zuni and Hopi artisans. If you ever have the opportunity to visit New Mexico sure to make time to visit Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos and Gallup. You will definitely enjoy the experience and acquire comprehensive knowledge of how this gemstone one has been such an important part of our culture and folklore. The opportunities are abundant to see real traditional tribal silversmiths and create their jewelry designs contemporary turquoise from beginning to end. The creative talent of indigenous peoples have been handed down through many generations of experience and technique. Designs and techniques have certainly changed from one generation to another, but the magic stone has maintained its unique appeal and distinctive and will do so for many years to come.
